Someone buys a jar of bright saffron-orange cordyceps online, and someone in the comments says it is fake, that real keeda jadi comes from a caterpillar in the Himalaya and this orange stuff is a cheap copy. Both people are half right and half wrong. There are two different cordyceps here, both real, and neither is a fake of the other. This is an honest comparison of the two, wild Cordyceps sinensis and cultivated Cordyceps militaris. What each one is, what is measurably inside it, and which fits what you want.
The confusion worth clearing up
The word cordyceps does not name one mushroom. It names a whole group of related fungi. Within that group, two species get almost all of the attention in India, and people mix them up constantly.
The first is Cordyceps sinensis, better known as keeda jadi or yarsagumba, the wild Himalayan caterpillar fungus. The second is Cordyceps militaris, a separate species with bright orange, club-shaped fruiting bodies that can be grown on grain in a clean room. Because keeda jadi is the famous, expensive one, a lot of people assume it is the only real cordyceps, and that anything grown on grain must be an imitation of it.
That assumption is where the trouble starts. Cultivated Cordyceps militaris is not a lab-made copy of keeda jadi. It is its own species that also grows in the wild around the world, and has done for as long as keeda jadi has. The only thing people changed is the growing conditions. Calling it fake keeda jadi is a little like calling a farmed apple a fake wild apple. A different tree, but real fruit either way.
A counterfeit pretends to be something it is not. Cultivated Cordyceps militaris pretends to be nothing. It is openly a different species from wild sinensis, sold under its own name, grown on grain rather than gathered from a caterpillar. The only fakery in this category is when someone sells cultivated militaris labelled as wild keeda jadi at wild keeda jadi prices. The mushroom is real. The label would be the lie.
What wild sinensis is
Cordyceps sinensis, or more precisely Ophiocordyceps sinensis, is the Himalayan caterpillar fungus. It forms when a fungus grows through the larva of a ghost moth in high alpine meadows, then pushes a thin dark stroma up out of the caterpillar's head end and into the spring air. The Hindi name is exact about it: keeda means insect, jadi means root. The insect-root.
It grows only in cold, thin-aired country above roughly 3,800 metres, along the high Himalaya through Tibet, Nepal, and the Indian state of Uttarakhand. In India it is hand-collected in the Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts during a short spring window, piece by piece, by Forest-Department-licensed collectors. And no one has been able to farm the wild Himalayan species at scale. It needs the moth, the altitude, the cold, and the brief thaw, all at once. Remove any one and the partnership does not form.

What cultivated militaris is
Cordyceps militaris is a separate species with saffron-orange, club-shaped fruiting bodies. Unlike its Himalayan cousin, it can be grown on a grain substrate in controlled conditions, in clean rooms with set temperature, humidity, and light. That one difference changes how it reaches you. It can be grown to a consistent standard, kept in steady supply, and tested batch by batch. A wild caterpillar fungus can do none of that.

Cordycepin is the compound most people have heard of, even if they have never heard the name. It is a nucleoside, chemically 3'-deoxyadenosine, and it occurs naturally in cordyceps. The details matter here, because this is where a lot of marketing gets loose.
When researchers have measured cordycepin across the two species, the cultivated one comes out ahead. Kim and colleagues reported in 2005 that cultivated Cordyceps militaris contains substantially more cordycepin than wild Cordyceps sinensis. That is a measurement of what is inside the mushroom, nothing more. It is a content fact, not a benefit.

The analysis measured cordycepin content and reported substantially higher levels in cultivated Cordyceps militaris than in wild Cordyceps sinensis. This is a comparison of what the mushrooms contain. It is not a test of any effect in a person, and it does not say one mushroom does more than the other inside the body.
So the famous wild Himalayan fungus is not the one richest in the famous compound. The bright orange cultivated species is. That surprises people, but it is what the analysis shows.
What cordycepin actually does inside a person is a separate question from how much of it a mushroom holds, and it is one we will not turn into a sales pitch. For completeness, a 2017 supplementation trial in trained males reported measurable changes in physical performance parameters. We note that only as a neutral study fact. Wild keeda jadi grows on fragile, slow-to-recover alpine land, and in many places it has been over-collected as demand across Asia has grown. That pressure is real enough that collection is now regulated: in Uttarakhand it is managed through Forest-Department permissions and local committees, and collectors work under licence. Sourcing it responsibly, through that licensed system, is the honest way to buy it, and it is how ours is gathered. But every gram of wild keeda jadi still comes out of a high mountain meadow.
Cultivated Cordyceps militaris does not touch that ecosystem at all. It is grown indoors, on grain, far from any alpine slope. No meadow is dug and no caterpillar is taken. Supply does not depend on how a fragile mountain habitat is holding up this season. For a lot of people, that is reason enough on its own to reach for the cultivated species for everyday use and to keep the wild piece for what it is, a rare and traditional thing.
Veg or non-veg
This question comes up a lot in India, and the answer really is different for the two species.
Wild Cordyceps sinensis grows on an insect larva. The caterpillar is part of the organism you are buying. Many strict vegetarians, and most people following a Jain diet, choose to avoid it for that reason, and that is a fair choice to make.

Choose wild Cordyceps sinensis, keeda jadi, if what you want is the rare Himalayan piece and the history behind it, and you are happy to pay for scarcity and to source it through a licensed, tested channel. It is a remarkable thing to hold, and for many buyers the story and the rarity are the whole point.
Choose cultivated Cordyceps militaris if you want a consistent, batch-tested extract, the higher measured cordycepin content, a vegetarian-friendly source, a lighter footprint on the mountains, and a price a fraction of the wild one.
